Annotations for I Dont Love You

Lyric: [Verse 1]
Annotation:
In relation to Gerard’s comment: [I Don’t Love You] was a commentary on the band and how some people feel about us. We wanted to say, ‘You may hate us but we’re still here.’ We wanted to say, ‘Here we are, and we’re better. Here we are and we’re more daring and defiant than ever." The first verse is the band speaking to fans that no longer like their music. They won’t change for those that want their old sound or style. When the fans rediscover them / like them again, they’ll just change again. In relation to The Black Parade’s story line: The Patient is telling his lover to leave and being quite adamant on the fact that he won’t change his mind. When she then comes crawling back, he’ll be dead

Lyric: So take your gloves and get out
Annotation:
Most times regular gloves are something people wear to keep warm in cold outside environments (she’s going need them when she leaves.) But in the next chorus of the song she gets ‘knocked down and out’ and given the opportunity to get up or stay down just like a boxer would. Boxers also wear gloves… maybe these ‘gloves’ allude to a foreshadowing.

Lyric: Another dollar’s just another blow
Annotation:
Gerard uses the words ‘beatings’ and ‘knock you down and out’ and then uses ‘blood’ noun: blow; a powerful stroke with a hand, weapon, or hard object. “he received a blow to the skull” so it could quite possibly mean that after all the blood she owes (pain she caused) that anything else contributed (another dollar) to their love life will just be another blow to the situation and it’s a blow that’s hard to see coming, it will knocked her down which probably why he says the next line…

Lyric: [Guitar Solo]
Annotation:
One line in this guitar solo sounds very similar to and may be a reference to one of the guitar solos in Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. The phrase is almost the same in both songs, except that they are in different keys, and I Don’t Love You embellishes the phrase more than Bohemian Rhapsody does.

Lyric: And after all this time that you still owe
Annotation:
The song’s protagonist is verbally expressing their disappointment in lost time from an unstable and toxic relationship. The character wishes he could get that wasted time back, to what end is unclear though.

Lyric: Well, when you go
Don’t ever think I’ll make you try to stay
Annotation:
When gerard ways lover goes, he doesnt want them to think he will make them stay. If he made them stay it would lead into a unhealthy relationship.

Lyric: Sometimes I cry so hard from pleading
Annotation:
The Patient has tried so hard to convince her to leave him that he is pleading her to just go and to forget about him, driving himself to tears over and over in doing so.

Lyric: You’re still a good-for-nothing, I don’t know
Annotation:
They begin to start to say something hurtful “you’re still a good-for-nothing…” but they stop mid sentence. All the pain that that person has caused numbed them to a point where there’s no use in even “insulting” them, that won’t change anything at all.

Lyric: But baby, when they knock you down and out
 Is where you oughta stay
Annotation:
I think this is referring to surgery. (this album is about someone dying of cancer) and he’s saying he would rather die in surgery after the anesthesia (being knocked out) rather than letting the disease take him.

Lyric: So sick and tired of all the needless beating
Annotation:
PROPOSED SUGGESTION: ‘Needless beating’ could refere to the patient’s heart having no use anymore as he believes that there is no way out of his situation/illness and that he will inevitably die of cancer. ‘Sick and tired’ is both mental and physical ; the patient wants to rid himself of the pain of the couple’s relationship and the pain of living, or rather just surviving, with this illness.

Lyric: Better get out while you can
Annotation:
She’s crying, and the tears are ruining her makeup. The Patient wants his lover to wipe the tears away and leave, he wants her to move on. It’s possible he feels this way because he’s dying of cancer. The Patient wants to break it off with the girl while he’s still alive, rather than their relationship ending once he’s dead. When mentioning the song, Gerard said, [“I Don’t Love You” is] about being dead and about people not liking you – it was a commentary on the band and how some people feel about us. We wanted to say, ‘You may hate us but we’re still here.’ We wanted to say, ‘Here we are, and we’re better. Here we are and we’re more daring and defiant than ever.

Lyric: I don’t love you like I loved you yesterday
I don’t love you like I loved you yesterday
Annotation:
It worked — The Patient convinced both himself and his significant other to move on. This is established by the fact he doesn’t say this as a question, but he instead states it. Whether he actually means it or is just saying it is unclear.

Lyric: And after all the blood that you still owe
Annotation:
This plays on the idea that if you make someone spill blood, you owe them some of yours. This person obviously caused a lot of pain, so karma will likely come back to haunting. This line also references another song on the album called “Blood.” In the song, The Patient gives doctors and others all the blood and his last efforts in his body before dying.

Lyric: When you go, and would you even turn to say
”I don’t love you like I did yesterday”?
Annotation:
He venomously asks her to convince him she doesn’t love him anymore so his conscience is eased as he leaves her. He could also be wondering if she would even dare profess that she no longer loves him when she leaves him.

Lyric: And maybe when you get back
I’ll be off to find another way
Annotation:
If she tries to come back to him pleading for him to take her back, he wants her to know he’s over her and he’s going to find another person to love. But… He’s not going to find someone else to love. He’s dying of cancer (the whole album is about the Patient dying of cancer) so “off to find another way” means to go to Heaven/Hell (as hinted at in the video, Welcome to the Black Parade, he is going towards hell)
